Lusail City Sets Two Guinness World Records for Its District Cooling System

Qatari Diar announced that Lusail City’s district cooling system has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records with two world records, marking a new achievement that highlights Qatar’s progress in developing and operating major infrastructure projects in line with international standards.

The first record recognises Lusail City’s integrated district cooling network as the largest district cooling network in the world, with a total length of 123.5 kilometres. The network connects district cooling plants and energy transfer stations to buildings through a pipeline system with diameters ranging from 100 to 1,600 millimeters. It is supported by smart leak detection systems, distributed isolation valves, and utility tunnels that enhance operational flexibility, facilitate maintenance, and ensure service continuity.

The second record recognises the chilled water tank at Lusail City’s North District Cooling Plant as the tallest thermal energy water storage tank in the world. The tank measures 46.041 metres in height and 32 metres in diameter, with a capacity of 12,000 ton of refrigeration. It supports the efficiency of the district cooling system by storing chilled water during periods of low demand and reusing it during peak demand periods, contributing to energy efficiency improvements of up to 14%.

The achievement reflects Qatari Diar’s strategic vision for Lusail City, which has focused since the project’s inception on developing an integrated city distinguished by advanced urban planning, high-quality design, and infrastructure capable of supporting sustainability, growth, and reliable services for future generations.
